Children’s Orthodontics in South Austin

As a parent, you want the best for your child, and one of the greatest gifts you can give them is a beautiful, healthy smile that will last a lifetime. At Moody Orthodontics, we understand the profound impact of a great smile and early intervention on a child’s well-being and self-confidence. We believe that the foundation for a lifelong healthy smile begins with early facial growth and dental development monitoring.

Why Early Orthodontics?

The Primary Goal

Most often, this is to address skeletal issues with the jaw and tooth alignment to provide adequate space for incoming permanent teeth

Timing is Everything

“Early” treatment, also called “interceptive” treatment, can be in a patient’s best interests if their problem could become more serious over time if left untreated.

The End Result

To intercept the developing problem, eliminate the cause, guide the growth of facial and jaw bones, and provide adequate space for incoming permanent teeth

Should I get braces for my kids?

Dr. Moody and  The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommend that your child’s first check-up with an orthodontist be performed when an orthodontic problem is first recognized, but no later than age 7.

When your child has enough permanent teeth, Dr. Moody can evaluate the developing teeth and jaws, providing a wealth of information. As an orthodontic specialist, she is trained to spot subtle problems, even in young children.

Following the check-up, there are typically three possible scenarios

  1. No treatment is expected to be necessary.
  2. Treatment with braces or Invisalign may be needed in the future. Your child will be followed periodically while the face and jaws grow.
  3. There is a problem that lends itself to early treatment intervention and/or “airway focused orthodontics“.  This approach enhances your child’s smile and improves their overall health and well-being.

In some cases, early (or Phase I) treatment is necessary to prevent future problems and avoid more aggressive procedures like permanent tooth extraction and/or jaw surgery.

Dr. Moody believes that growth and development checkups are crucial for children. That’s why Moody Orthodontics offers FREE growth checks and will continually monitor your child’s facial development and tooth eruption at no cost.

Most orthodontic problems can be detected at an early age. We take a conservative approach to early treatment, but early treatment will be recommended if an issue cannot be resolved later.

During a growth check, our experienced orthodontist, Dr. Moody, conducts a comprehensive evaluation. This includes assessing factors such as jaw proportion, airway, and speech. Additionally, an X-ray is taken to examine your child’s developing permanent teeth, ensuring a thorough understanding of their dental health.

Early (Phase I) treatment

Early (Phase I) treatment is a specialized approach that we offer to treat a child’s face and jaws before their growth is complete and the permanent teeth erupt. This proactive approach often involves addressing the airway and bones of the face, which cannot be treated once these structures stop growing or bones fuse. By addressing these issues early, we can potentially prevent more complex problems in the future.

Most early treatment (Phase I) takes 9-12 months and begins when the top and bottom permanent incisors (front teeth) have erupted. This can be around age 7 for some children, while for others, it may be closer to age 10, as dental development varies widely.

A second phase of treatment is usually needed later to align the permanent teeth with braces or Invisalign clear aligners once they all have erupted. This second phase is typically shorter and more accessible due to the corrections made during the first phase of early treatment.
